Heathrow is very well known for the International airport, which is the UK’s biggest airport flying out to destinations near and far, to the North of England to North America and Japan. However, staying in a Heathrow airport can also mean a chance to explore some of the UK’s best attractions as there is fantastic shopping, history and culture on the doorstep.
If you are staying at a hotel in Heathrow on business, waiting for a flight or after a flight, or just taking the time for a fun trip then here are a few places you have to visit.
Windsor Castle
When staying at a hotel in Heathrow you can impress your friends by hob-nobbing with the Queen, well, visiting the Queen’s official residence at Windsor Castle at least. Windsor Castle is the oldest castle in the world that is still occupied; many older castles have been turned into tourist attractions primarily or are in desperate need of some TLC. Windsor Castle dates back to the time of William the Conqueror and also has many tombs of the British royal family and the magnificent St George’s Chapel.
The tombs in Windsor Castle hold the bodies of ten English monarchs and their close families including the Queen Mother and King George VI, the Queen’s parents and the ashes of her sister Princess Margaret.
Looking through the stunning rooms you will come across Queen Mary’s Doll’s House which is in really good condition and is a miniature model of the castle. Queen Mary had the doll’s house commissioned in 1921 and every detail has been included and if you look closely you will see the more modern details of that time such as a miniature flushing toilet and real toilet paper.
Legoland
If you have a young family or are just young at heart then Legoland is a fantastic and unique experience. Legoland has lots of rides and attractions, with themed set ups, showing popular stars or film sets, everything is completely made out of Lego. All the rides are ideal for younger children and children can drive around in small Lego cars. This is an ideal place to visit if you have a young family as it is safe and fun with plenty for all ages to enjoy.
Ascot Racecourse
If you love horses, excitement of the race or just fancy a flutter at a day at the races then Ascot Racecourse is a fun and thrilling day out. Whether you get dressed up or go as you are, an outing to the races can suit all tastes. There are special charity days and Ladies days as well as many other events but for most of the time you can get family tickets starting from as little as £12.
A favourite of the Queen, Ascot is celebrating its 300th birthday but we have to say she looks great for her age and you will definitely enjoy the food and drink as the hospitality is renowned.
Open Top Bus Tour
If you are short of time and want to see as much as possible then the Open Top Bus Tour is for you. You are guided around the area in the open topped bus for the best viewing point. If you fancy something more decadent then you could try a horse-drawn carriage. Tours pass all the best spots, such as the Savill Garden in the grounds of Windsor Castle which is an ornamental set of gardens with individual themes. You are also close to Hounslow Heath which is now a nature reserve but was once famous for being the place where highwaymen would hold up coaches as they travelled into London. Luckily there are no more highwaymen so you will be safe on your bus tour.
Hotels in Heathrow are an excellent place to stay to see the local attractions of which we have mentioned just a few above. Other things to do include shopping and visiting bars and restaurants close by; just ask at your hotel reception and they will be happy to point you in the right direction.
